The most nervous person at a first martial arts class is almost never the child. It's the parent in the lobby wondering if their kid will freeze, melt down, or refuse to take their shoes off. So here is exactly how a first class works at our school, minute by minute, so you both walk in knowing the plan.
Before you arrive
Dress your child in comfortable workout clothes. Shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. Comfortable clothes they can move in, and a smile. We'll handle the rest. Arrive about ten minutes early so your child can see the space while it's calm, and eat light beforehand. A full stomach and jumping jacks are old enemies.
The greeting matters more than you'd think
When you walk in, a coach greets your child by name and hands them a starter goodie bag. Small thing, big effect. A child who has been personally welcomed walks onto the mat as a guest, not a stranger.
They join a real class, on purpose
We don't run separate intro classes, and that's deliberate. Your child joins the actual class they would attend as a student: a fun warm-up, skill drills broken into small steps, and a team activity. You're seeing the real product on day one, real coaches, real classmates, real energy. Both parents are welcome to watch, and we encourage it.
What if my child is shy, or won't participate?
This happens weekly, and it's fine. Our coaches are trained to invite, not force. Some kids watch from the edge for ten minutes before they join, and the coach lets that happen while quietly making space for them in the next drill. With up to three coaches on the floor, one of them always has the bandwidth to bring a hesitant child in gently. No child is ever embarrassed for being nervous.
The white-belt ceremony
Every first class ends the same way: the new student stands in front of the class and earns their white belt. It takes two minutes, and parents regularly tell us it's the moment their child got in the car talking a mile a minute. The belt says this journey has officially started.
What happens after
Nothing you need to brace for. No contract on a clipboard, no hard sell in the lobby. We'll walk you through the membership options in plain English, and you decide on your own time. If the answer is no, we'll still wave your kid over to say goodbye.
Ready when you are: book a free trial class, or read up on the right program for your child's age, Tiny Titans (4-7), Guardian Kids (8-12), or Gladiators (13+).
